How and Why You Make a Difference
Through the nuclear-age fifties, through the turbulent times of the sixties, through the disco era seventies, through the music video eighties, through the GEN-X nineties, and finally through the interconnected
world of the 21st century, the students that graced the halls of this East Honolulu campus shared one commonality, an unwavering bond that transcends our past, present and future, and that is the notion of "WE ARE KALANI."
WE ARE joined by the belief that our school provided wonderful friendships that last a lifetime.
WE ARE thankful for the opportunities afforded to us inside the classroom and outside of it through our athletic and extracurricular endeavors.
WE ARE optimistic that Kalani’s best days are indeed ahead of her and that WE can play a role in paving the road on her journey.
The Kalani High School 50th Anniversary Celebration is a place where you can stand shoulder to shoulder with other graduates across the decades, and proudly state in unison “WE ARE KALANI.”
Why is your kokua needed? Due to the realities of the DOE's Weighted Student Formula (WSF), the amount of public education money allocated to our school have decreased since its inception.
The chart below shows a breakdown of costs for Kalani's
2008-09 school budget:
As the chart shows, of Kalani's $7,823,336.00 annual budget for the 2008-09
school year, over 93% is used for payroll. Here's the breakdown of that 93%.
- 76% is used for Certificated staff. These are your full-time classroom teachers, school administrators, counselors, librarians, and instructional support positions.
- 9% is used for Classified staff. These include your school custodians, office clerks, and security.
- 6% is used for Student Services personnel. These include your special education educational assistants (EAs).
This leaves a little more than 7% of the allocated funds from WSF to pay for all operating expenses like classroom supplies, equipment, electricity, and worthwhile programs for the current generation of Kalani Falcons.
Despite this startling financial picture, Kalani continues to shine as one of the few public high schools in Hawaii that is consistently "In Good Standing" with the federal No Child Left Behind (NCLB) law.
Your participation and generous contribution will indeed ensure that Kalani's future will be bright and prosperous.
